How does a need for power and pride contribute to global transformations? Why is colonialism to blame for what happened to Mahinarangi Tautu?

Global transformation is a process of real change in the economic, political, and cultural organization at the regional, national, and global levels. Meaning it is how the world changes politically, economically, and how the culture evolves. Some countries, they want to have a monarchy, some countries want to have a constitutional government. So the need for power and pride changes how a country works. It changes its standpoint. The need for power may come to the country as a monarchy change. So that country may change to a monarchy to show power and pride to the civilians and other countries. So the need for power and pride are able to change a country. By many different ways. The change that is happening within that country and changing the world also. If the United States changed its government to a monarchy, it would have an impact on the world. There would be a change in economics. There would be a change from a political standpoint as well. Many people would go against the monarchy government, and people who don’t support the King or Queen. There would be a change in culture because the whole culture of the United States would end up changing.

The loss of culture had an effect with the Mahinarangi Tautu situation. This is because many people who are uncultured with Mahinarangi’s culture are unable to say her name properly. “‘Can you imagine your child being too embarrassed to say their name because people won’t make a decent effort to pronounce it properly?’ she said.” Her mother wanted to give her a beautiful name and the people who worked at the daycare were unable to try and pronounce so they didn’t make an effort to even try. Something similar happened with their ancestors. They changed their name from Perepe-Perana to Phillips, Mahinarangi’s mom doesn’t want to do that. Having a lack of culture respect is something very big. Her name was apart of her culture. Being unable to try and pronounce it shows lack of respect for the culture. The daycare which Mahinarangi was at, could of asked how do you pronounce her name but instead they just shortened the name.

Why is Balancing Revolution and Evolution Important?

French Slave Trade was a very significant role in the reason why slaves should be free. France was the third largest slave trade in the transatlantic slave trade. In the article about the French slave trade, it stated “Of the 1,381,000 Africans loaded onto French ships during the course of the transatlantic trade, 1,165,000 survived the Middle Passage to encounter harsh conditions mostly in French Caribbean colonies.” With this being included in the article, it shows the reader the harsh conditions which the slaves had to undergo during the slave trade. The numbers of the slaves being traded and the overall ending trade 216,000 slaves estimated died throughout the harsh conditions they had to go through.

Revolution means that there is a sudden change in political power which happens when the people revolt against the government due to a biased mistreat. Evolution can be both social and political. Social evolution is the evolutionary area of social interactions, especially between individuals of the same type. Political Evolution is the social processes that involve efforts to create, or to acquire control over, a social system, as well as the process of exercising control. So it is important to maintain a balance between revolution and evolution is important because it keeps the government and the people doing right. Revolution happens when mistreatment is happening, much like the French slave trade. Evolution happens to people of the same race and included efforts to create a social system like society. So keeping a balance keeps the population happy since people aren’t getting mistreated. It keeps the population from wanting to form another government to get away from the mistreatment.

Women in Top Jobs

You might be asking, what do top jobs have to do with women? Well to answer your question, it has everything to do with it. Many women who have high jobs are put in a position. That position could be related to their children or men. Men are usually viewed as being in the top, high power jobs. This is because their schedules do not have to be flexible. While women are viewed as their children’s caretakers.

Men also have a higher rate of salary than women. The article “Wanted: More Women in Top Jobs”, says “for every dollar that a man earns, a woman earns 79 cents“. That means that men have a higher rate of pay than women. Depending on the occupation of the person, shows the salary gap in genders. Women in educational jobs get paid very low. You most likely see more women teaching than men.

Oprah Winfrey is an American talk show host, television producer, actress, author, and philanthropist.

The corporates that do have women working in higher positions seem to be more successful. Having women in those high power jobs help keep the business with talented workers also. Many companies mandate for there to be equal or close to equal men and women in the job. I think that having a diversity of men and women working together is good. I think this because it gives the company a good look.

Sometimes women in high power are better than having men. If women had her own company of women’s clothes and she ran the business, women would support the clothing line. If a man had a women’s clothing business, it may raise questions pertaining to if the clothes are comfortable and good. If a man had his own business that sold sporting goods for football, people would most likely support that business. A man has more experience and knows what helps when it comes to football. Depending on the business, affects whether people will support that business depending on the person in charge.

Women are viewed as their children’s caretakers. This means if a child is sick, it is expected for their mom to stay home with them. Even when women go on maternity leave, they are having to have extra days so they can have that baby and take care of it for the first days of life. The father is looked upon as having to work to provide for the family. Women can provide for the family but they also have to take care of the family. Having to do this, women have a hard time taking off and having a schedule that allows for them to be able to assist their child. So of course, men have a higher chance of getting promotions and placed into high jobs. They don’t have to have a flexible schedule, unlike women.

Overall, I think that women should have higher jobs and be able to have that flexible schedule they may need. I think it’s good for both genders to be successful and viewed as equals.

The Story of an Hour

In The Story of an Hour by Kate Choplin, it talks about grief and tragic loss. The main point from the story that I concluded is that tragic loss can cause grief if it happens to someone who one loves dearly. The author using characterization to help drag this point of during the text. By saying, “She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance”(Kate Chopin, 1). Pulling this from the text shows the reader how conflict can affect people differently. Mrs. Mallard chooses a different way of showing her grief because she didn’t want to hear the story about her husband’s death. The author also included, “She knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead” (Kate Choplin, 2). The kind and tender hands of her husband, she knew would cause her to go back to the sadness that she felt when she first heard about her husband’s passing. Another piece of evidence that I think relates to the main point of the story is, “When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease” (Kate Choplin, 3). Dealing with a tragic loss, her heart problem made it so she didn’t have to feel the grief and the pain of living without her husband. If the author didn’t include she had a heart problem at the being of the story, it would make the story not end the same. So making the character the way Kate Choplin did, caused the story to end with Mrs. Mallard dying because of her heart problem. With her husband dying, it caused her to go through the pain and suffering of losing someone which she loved dearly.

How Actions Can Have an Effect on Leadership

The 17th-18th century was a time period which was known as the Age of Absolutism. Now, what is the age of absolutism? Breaking the word down, it’s absolute; meaning the king has the undeniable most power. An example of an absolute monarch is Louis XIV, the King of France 1643 – 1715. He only answered to God. He inherited the throne because his bloodline was “chosen” to be a representation of God on Earth. He was able to do some great things for France, but he also wasn’t favored by people. The age of Absolutism was known as the time of very powerful monarchs. The other form of government during that time period was a constitutionalism government which is the total opposite of an absolute monarch. There was a ruler of the country but the citizens still have a part in the government and control. The main difference between the two governments is, one gives people freedom and one limits it. One way people still had a tiny part in absolute monarchies was by having a parliament. For example, the Petition of Rights was a document sent by the English Parliament to King Charles, which complained about the breaches of the law. A petition is a request that is addressed to a ruler or a group of people in authority of power. A parliament works in the legislative branch which makes sure the ruler isn’t abusing their power. The document which King Charles received was called the Petition of Rights. Which stated no taxation without the consent of parliament, no imprisonment without cause, no quartering of soldiers on subject and no martial law in peacetime. With having an absolute monarch, it is hard not having a say so in anything. So having a parliament will help the people to keep check with their ruler. Another very important document was The English Bill of Rights which limited the monarch’s power. The English Bill of Rights stated No suspending of Parliament’s laws, no levying of taxes without a specific grant from parliament. No interfering with freedom of speech in parliament. No penalty for a citizen petitions the king about grievances.

The map above shows how countries looked during the Age of Absolutism.

Another Way Which Actions Take Part in the Role of Leadership

Charles I was the son of James I and took over the throne once his father died. He was always at war with Spain and France due to his conflict between him and the parliament. During this time he needed money so he came to the parliament for help, but the parliament refused. He did this several times and every time it refused, he dissolved it. In 1637 Charles tried to force England under one religion. The scots rebelled and Charles fled to London. During the English Civil War, the Puritans found a new general Oliver Cromwell. After he defeated the cavaliers, he abolished the monarchy and House Of Lords and drafted a new constitution with John Lambert called The Protectorate. In the new constitution they abolished activities they found sinful Ex… Sporting events, dancing, and theater. As Puritans Morality states he allowed religious toleration except for catholic but allowed jews. He united England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, Giving all the countries a place in the new British Parliament. Oliver Cromwell died, which affected the government, so a new parliament was selected. People loved Charles II, under this rule parliament passed a guarantee of freedom, called “habeas corpus”. Called his ruling period “the restoration”. Having no son, his brother James became king. The people didn’t like James because he was Catholic. He offended the people by putting Catholics in high offices. The parliament protested, he dissolved it. His daughter was the wife of William of Orange. Who parliament invited over to kick out James. This was called the “Glorious Revolution”. William and Mary had an impact on the English government because they consented to these limits on their royal power. The constitutional monarchy limited the ruler’s power. And the Bill of rights that was passed in 1689 placed many limits on monarchs which consist of, No suspending of Parliament’s laws, no levying of taxes without a specific grant from parliament. No interfering with freedom of speech in parliament. No penalty for a citizen to petitions the king about grievances. The cabinet was the ministers who acted in the ruler’s name but in reality, represented the major party of parliament.

In Today’s World, How Can We the People have an Affect on Society and Leadership?

A goal could be to help work to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world through the mobilization of public pressure, particularly on issues of rape, domestic violence, reproductive rights, trafficking, political participation, and gender discrimination. There actually is an organization whose goal is to help this problem, is called Equality Now. My partake would be to support this group and do everything I can to help women who are victims of anything relating to a male using them. Although, some of the things this organization is for, I am against. I still support them and the goal that they want for all women. An example of what this organization helps is reproductive rights. Which is the right to legal and safe abortion; the right to birth control; freedom from coerced sterilization and contraception; the right to access good-quality reproductive healthcare; and the right to education and access in order to make free and informed. Although I am totally against abortions, I think having this right can help those who feel as if they have to do something that they feel is better for themselves. A study was taken to give people reasons why gender discrimination was something that happens very often. “We saw real frustration at the realization that their female colleagues were routinely experiencing obstacles that they and their male colleagues were not.” This came from a male who was giving the study. I do think gender discrimination is something that is a major problem. For example, if I were going up from a job and a male was going up for the same job and we both had the same degrees and experience. I would have a higher percentage of chance to get the job than the male. Only because I could be paid less than what they would pay the male. In other words, the median salary for men is roughly 19 percent higher than the median salary for women. In fact, when men and women with the same employment characteristics do similar jobs, women earn $0.98 for every dollar earned by an equivalent man. Another circumstance is, 1 in 5 women (18.3%) and 1 in 71 men (1.4%) have been raped in their lifetime. There are so many people which are victims of various things that involve males abusing women. I think this organization is a really good and a worthy movement which is needed all over the world, because how are things supposed to change without someone standing up for their rights?

Election 2020: How Will Things Turnout?

It is that time of the year. It’s been 4 years since the last election between Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. Now, it’s Donald Trump against Joe Biden. As the years go on, it seems like the presidential candidacy gets more competitive and more challenging to win over each state. No one can really know who or what the American people will do or who will be the next President.

More Michiganders view Biden favorably than Trump, new survey shows

Trump and Biden are going to head to head to win over states to ensure the future of the country. Many things have appeared during this election process. One major influence this election caused is, democrats say they don’t like Biden but they don’t like Trump more. Republications say they don’t like Trump but they don’t like Trump more. By this, it shows people for both parties aren’t in favor of their candidate but they will vote for the one they like better.

In many polls, it shows Biden is off to a lead above Trump. Those polls aren’t exactly correct. Like what happened in 2016 with Trump and Hillary Clinton. This picture above is what the polls think. Nothing is for certain. The reason I added that picture was because of the different states and their opinions. California is a major blue state, we know that Biden won there. In Alabama, it is a red state, which means Trump won there. It’s pretty self explainatory where the majority of replications and democrats live just by seeing the state colors.

I found in an article, “Generally speaking, Americans have benefitted from policies associated with ‘Trumpism’. Just weeks before the presidential election, an impressive 56 percent of voters said they were better off than they were four years ago; that 56 percent is higher than when the same question was asked in 1984, 1992, 2004, and 2012, when Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama ran for reelection” (The Hill by Kristin Tate). By reading this, it shows that many people have benefitted from Trump’s term in office. People may see this in a way that they think he has really helped America but some will just think that the resources are not true.

In another article, it says, “Democrats will have profoundly greater influence over redistricting heading into this decade than we did the last, and voters in many states will be drawn into fair, non-gerrymandered districts for the first time in a generation. (USA Today by Jessica Post)”. I thought long and hard about that statement. I can come up with the conclusion that it’s so true. If I got a dollar for every famous (actor, singer, etc.) person who posted about voting for Biden, I’d be as rich as them. Those famous people have such an influence on their audience. They get worshiped by some people. So of course, some people want to be just like them and if they say vote for Biden, they will no questions asked. Some will hear what the famous person has to say and their side of the story and that’s what they will believe.

The fate of America is in the hands of two presidential candidates and voting. The next 4 years could affect us all. By this, I think both candidates have a fair chance of winning the election. I can’t pick who is going to win at the moment but I really hope whoever wins, thinks about America’s best interest. Something that has stood out to me with this election is that this generation doesn’t know how to respect other’s views and opinions about who they are voting for. They bash each other for their own opinions. How are people supposed to be the same? We are made differently and think differently also.

Hunting Humans VS Hunting Animals

Yes you read that right. In the Most Dangerous Game, the game was hunting humans. Like you and me. Weird right?

Alike hunting animals, people have different opinions about hunting humans. In the story, it seemed natural to the General. To Rainsford it was very strange to have a game in which the goal is to kill the human. The goal of hunting is to kill the animal that you are hunting for.

With so many people hunting animals, it wipes out that population. The General was certainly wanting to kill off some of the human population with this game.

Rainsford at the end of the story was able to escape and show the General that he was more superior. Animals can get LUCKY if the person has a bad aim or if they simply can escape just like how Rainsford did from the General.

The article, “Does Hunting Help or Hurt the Environment?” talks about how hunting animals affects the population of those hunting species. In the article it says “And, ironic as it sounds since humans have wiped out many animal predators, some see hunting as a natural way to cull the herds of prey animals that, as a result, now reproduce beyond the environment’s carrying capacity. On the other hand, many environmental and animal advocates see hunting as barbaric, arguing that it is morally wrong to kill animals, regardless of practical considerations.” By reading this, I can see both sides of the argumentative conversation some might have.

I know killing people and animals are two totally different things but there are still opinions from both sides. Like in the paragraph above, people have different opinions on killing animals. Which the opinions are complete opposites, they still have valuable reasoning. In “The Most Dangerous Game”, it is normal for the General to hunt people. It is what he is use to. When Rainsford heard about this, he thought it was barbaric just like the people who think hunting animals is cruel.

With that being said, you have two sides of hunting. The absolute cruel to do so side and the side who thinks hunting animals is good for the environment.

How Does Becoming Enlightened Change your Willingness to Take a Risk?

There are many answers you can say to answer this question. You might need an example to help you understand a “risk” that you could be willing to do. People across the United States and even London, England have been willing to take a risk in order to put forth their opinion. Both country’s risk is the same but not the same meaning. The risk is protesting to not wear face covering.

What is so Bad About Wearing a Mask to Cause People to Protest Against it?

The difference between the protest in London and the United States is, one is doing it for a religious purpose and one is doing it because they should have a choice. Both places both are protesting for their right and choice to wear or not wear a mask. The United States citizens are protesting because it is against God. An Ohio Law-Maker also has an opinion about the topic, he claims “We are all created in the image and likeness of God. That image is seen the most by our face. I will not wear a mask. When we think of an image, do we think of a chest or our legs or our arms? We think of their faces. I don’t want to cover people’s faces. That’s the image of God right there and I want to see it in my brothers and sisters.” Ohio recently passed a law saying you must wear a mask, this wasn’t supported by the lawmaker.

What Else Has Had an Effect on this Topic?

Not only has protesting been perceived but preachers at various churches who are tech-savvy have been posting on Facebook about the issue. Those posts have been seen over a million times.

A Picture from the protest in Orem, Utah.

Even though wearing a mask is considered a religious issue, it isn’t popular because at least 6 million people have already got infected with the virus.

Having religious reasoning is able to give you valuable reasoning to some people, it can’t always be an excuse. For instance, “a couple got sentenced to jail because of the death of their two children because ‘medicine was against their religion’.” A surprising factor related to that topic is that childhood vaccinations can be a religious reason that will allow you to get approval to not get the vaccine in at least 44 of the 50 states.

This picture is from the protest in London. A protester stated “If I’m going to get Covid and die from it, then so be it.”

The Reformation Similarities

What is the Reformation and how does it relate to this topic? The reformation is a 16th-century movement for the reform of abuses in the Roman Catholic Church ending in the establishment of the Reformed and Protestant Churches. In easier words, it is a movement which started from Martin Luther going against the religion of the Catholic church.

Who is Martin Luther and what is his impact you may be asking. Martin Luther loved during the Renaissance period. Which is the transitional movement in Europe between medieval and modern times beginning in the 14th century in Italy; period of rebirth. So yes it was a very long time ago.

You may be asking how does the Reformation relate to the topic you’ve read about. Here is why: During the 14th century, everyone obeyed the Catholic church and no one doubt anything. The Pope was like their second God. Martin realized that the church was corrupt. He claimed that the Church was using its power to get people to worship the Pope Instead of the Bible. Martin thought, he Pope shouldn’t have all the power, instead the All Mighty God. Martin disagreed with having to go through the Pope for salvation instead of going to God. Having this opinion, caused so much controversial feedback on either Martin or the Church. Secular means not subject to or bound by religious rule. Many secular things appeared in regards to the Reformation. Political, religious, and social affects impacted as well.

Social effect: Led to modern democracy, skepticism, capitalism, individualism, civil rights, and many of the modern values we cherish today.

Political effect: By challenging the authority of monarchs and popes, the reformation indirectly contributed to the growth of democracy.

Religious effect: The Reformation led to the reformulation of certain basic tenets of Christian belief and resulted in the division of Western Christendom between Roman Catholicism and the new Protestant traditions.

Seeing people who are able to do stand up for their rights and what they believe in, it makes me see how one voice in this big world we live in can make a difference. The whole protesting was brought together by someone and then people started participating in it because they believed them and were able to find reasoning to stand up for that topic. Life is too short to go with the flow, instead, show your voice, speak your truth. That is being enlightened to take a risk.

How to Get Better Jumps

Cheer jumps, everybody either hates or loves them. Here are some ways that you can improve your jumps!

Here are the most common jumps!

#1: Stretch Constantly Everyday

I know it sucks having to take a break from Netflix but the good thing is, you can do it and watch your favorite show! Just stretching will make you more flexible in your jumps. It won’t hurt your muscles or strain them near as much! If you’re worried about stretches that will hurt, the more you do them, the easier they become! Make sure you are pointing your toe in your stretches so that it’s more natural to point in a jump!

#2: Focus on Jumping High

Everyone focus’ on getting their legs up. Well if you can’t jump high enough, then how in the world will you get your legs up? Focus on just jumping up in the air. Let your legs come to you and not you coming to your legs. By focusing on the jumping part, you will eventually get higher and higher in your jumps.

#3: Hand Placement

You may be thinking, “what does hand placement have to do with jumps?” Well, it actually has a lot to do with your jumps. Just by making sure your arms are in the specific motion then you already have better jumps. Focus on jumping up and having your arms in that motion. Your legs will come up higher if you make a simple fix. It also helps your hips rotate a lot more giving you a pretty and high jump.

#4: Do NOT Drop your Chest

By dropping your chest, it makes you look bad. I’m sorry but it needs to be said. Like step #3, placing your arms in a T will help with not dropping your chest. Let your legs come to you!

By doing these steps, you should see an improvement in your jumps!

The Themes of The Scarlet Ibis

The themes that the author was trying to convey to the reader were acceptance and love. The story is written about a brother who had a dream vision of a brother but, not everything in your dreams can be real. That is shown in Scarlet Ibis.

Acceptance

The author is trying to convey to the readers that accepting someone for who they are is what matters. He was portraying this theme throughout the story. For instance, the author says “I thought myself pretty smart at many things, like holding my breath, running, jumping, or climbing the vines in Old Woman Swamp, and I wanted more than anything else someone to race to Horsehead Landing, someone to box with, and someone to perch with in the top fork of the great pine behind the barn, were across the fields and swamps you could see the sea. I wanted a brother.” With this being included, it should the reader that the boy had a picture of the perfect brother that he has always wanted. Just a few sentences later, it says “It was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable, so I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow.” The boy was upset that his brother didn’t match up with the “dream brother” that was pictured. After Doodle grew older, his brother began to accept him for his differences. “It seemed so hopeless from the beginning that it’s a miracle I didn’t give up. But all of us must have something or someone to be proud of, and Doodle had become mine” This shows the reader that he wanted to help Doodle accomplish tasks. He wanted Doodle to have confidence in himself and prove people wrong. Brother’s mindset shifted majorly from wanting to kill Doodle to helping Doodle. He accepted their differences and used that to make him a better person.

Love

The Scarlet Ibis shows love in many ways. You can love someone for who they are no matter what you infer about them. The author is able to show this theme by including, “Hope no longer hid in the dark palmetto thicket but perched like a cardinal in the lacy toothbrush tree, brilliantly visible. “Yes, yes,” I cried, and he cried it too, and the grass beneath us was soft and the smell of the swamp was sweet.” This is when Doodle finally was able to walk. The joy and love that he had for his brother getting to accomplish something so big in his life was enormous. “I would teach him to run, to swim, to climb trees, and to fight. He, too, now believed in my infallibility, so we set the deadline for these accomplishments less than a year away, when, it had been decided, Doodle could start to school.” With this sentence, it shows the love that he had for his brother. Even though he was different than other kids, he still wanted the best for his brother. He spent everyday teaching Doodle how to walk. That shows the amount of love he had for his brother. “I began to weep, and the tear-blurred vision in red before me looked very familiar. “Doodle!” I screamed above the pounding storm and threw my body to the earth above his. For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of rain.” He didn’t realize how much he loved Doodle until Doodle was no longer there.
